Ankle Sprains

An ankle sprain occurs when ligaments, the tissues connecting bones, are stretched or torn, often due to a sudden twisting or rolling of the ankle. Treatment typically involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE).
- What is an ankle sprain?
An ankle sprain happens when the ligaments around the ankle joint are stretched or torn, often due to an injury like twisting or rolling the ankle.
- Symptoms:
Common symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty walking.
- Grade of Sprains:
- Grade 1: Mildest, involves a slight stretching of the ligament.
- Grade 2: Moderate, involves a partial tear of the ligament.
- Grade 3: Most severe, involves a complete tear of the ligament.
- Treatment (RICE):
- Rest: Avoid activities that cause pain, swelling, or discomfort.
- Ice: Apply an ice pack or ice slush bath for 15-20 minutes, several times a day.
- Compression: Use a bandage to help reduce swelling.
- Elevation: Keep the injured foot elevated above heart level to reduce swelling.
- When to see a doctor:
If the pain is severe, you can't bear weight on your ankle, or if you have any concerns, seek medical attention.
- Rehabilitation:
Once the initial pain and swelling subside, gentle exercises can help restore strength and flexibility.
- Prevention:
Stretching before and after physical activity, wearing supportive footwear, and avoiding risky activities can help prevent ankle sprains.
